Tasks 3 & 4
Second & Third Conditional
Second Conditional is used to talk about an imaginary or hypothetical situation.
If/Unless + Past Simple + would or modal verb + verb
Ex: If + I won (the lottery) + I would/might + buy (a new house)
Third Conditional is used to talk about an impossible or unfulfilled situation in the past. Something that never happened on a specific moment and therefore, it can never happen.
If/Unless + Past Perfect Simple + would have / modal perfect + Past Participle
Ex: If + I had studied (more) + I would/could have got (a better grade)
In these two images on the left you can find a brief summary with the structure and the use of each conditionals, as well as a few examples.
Once this is clear, you can move on to task 4, where you will read the sentences and decide what kind of conditional is it.
Task 5
- If he (have) money, he (travel) a lot (Second)
- If I (be) you, I (get) a new job (Second)
- If I (be) you, I (apply) for a better job (Third)
- If I (have) a pet, I (make) it very happy (Third)
- If I (study) more, I (get) a higher grade (Third)
- If we (stay) here, we (buy) a new house (Second)
